Rousseau on St. Peter's Island

"The most impressive way of getting to St. Peter’s Island is to catch a boat in Biel on a misty day. After a cozy coffee-break on board, eventually the mist will have cleared and the sun lights up the island as the boat approaches the pier. It was much the same in 1765, when the philosopher, educator, composer and botanist Jean-Jacques Rousseau, aged 53, fled there to escape from his contemporaries and from the disputes his writings had brought him. Under the old oak trees he found peace, serenity and pure nature. After Rousseau’s stay, the small unknown paradise became an important stage for travelers on the educational Grand Tour between London and Rome. Take a walk along the same paths, enjoy the lovely countryside, the waters around the peninsula and listen to excerpts from his musical composition. Feeling the esprit of the 18th century has never been so easy."
