"To be perfectly honest, La Chaux-de-Fonds has never inspired me very much. Until today when, thanks to UNESCO, I had an opportunity to find out all about it. I knew practically nothing about the history of clock-making and its links to the development and planning of the town but it’s extremely interesting. The tour takes us back to the time when the flourishing clock-making industry of the Neuchâtel mountains made more than half of the world’s production. As you walk along the straight streets, you can easily imagine the clock-makers behind their windows (south-facing to catch the light) and the swarming employees going up and down the streets carrying parts from one workshop to another.”
