L'Orfeo at Schloss Waldegg

10.08.2017 – 19.08.2017

L’Orfeo is a “favola in musica” – a fable set to music – by Claudio Monteverdi and is considered the earliest opera still being performed today. The libretto was written by Alessandro Striggio the Younger. The opera comprises a prologue and five acts. The storyline is based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Spanning the transition era from Renaissance to Baroque, the “intermedio”, a play with musical sequences between the acts, was dominant at the time. With L’Orfeo, Monteverdi developed this model into one of the first fully composed musical theatre dramas and the first that was made up of a succession of “arias” (this musical form was still very innovative at the time), recitatives, choruses, dances and ritornellos (orchestral sequences between acts).

Monteverdi started work on his opera in 1606. The première was performed by the Accademia degli Invaghiti in the ducal palace in Mantua on the occasion of Francesco IV Gonzaga’s birthday on 24 February 1607, and was so successful that a second performance was arranged immediately.

From 10 to 19 August 2017, the performances will be staged in the open air against the unique backdrop of Schloss Waldegg. In case of inclement weather, the 2017 summer performances will be held in Solothurn’s city theatre for the first time.
